Magnolia
Magnolia (1999)

IMDB rating: 8.00

Plot: Magnolia is the study of nine lives in one day in San Fernando Valley, California. These nine lives all connect and revolve around the game show “What Do Kids Know?”(WDKK), where a team of three kids play against adults and everytime the show is on, there is a new team of adults and the kids remain; if they won the previous game. Earl Partridge (the late Jason Robards) produced “WDKK” when it was first on in the late 60s. He is dying of brain and lung cancer and is being taken care of by Phil Parma (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a male nurse. Linda, Earl’s trophy wife (Julianne Moore) starts to fall in love with Earl for real, despite her cheating. Earl, rapidly dying on his bed, asks Phil to find his estranged son, Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise), who grew up hating Earl and now runs a seminar for single men, which teaches them how to seduce a woman and leave her… The host of “WDKK”, Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), is also dying, but not as rapidly as Earl. He has a very rocky relationship with his daughter Claudia (Melora Waters), who sniffs crack 24/7 and accuses her father of sexually molesting her. Police Officer Jim (John C. Reilly) goes to Claudia’s house after getting called about a disturbance. He falls in love with her right away… Stanley Specter (Jeremy Blackman) is a contestant on “WDKK”, who is a genius and is being used by his father to make money. If Stanley and his team keep winning, they will set a record on the show and get tons of money. The record Stanley is trying to beat is the 1968 record set by Donnie Smith (William H. Macy), who had the exact same childhood when he was on the show and has now grown up to be a pathetic loser. He’s been recently fired from his job, and is trying to find his way into happiness…

Kids will be mean to other kids, and it doesn’t really matter what their names are. A child with a fairly common & popular name can and will be made fun of just as easily as a child with a less common & unique name.

I like Jules Magnolia (what about Jewels though?)

Vallie Hope is so cute! I like Valentina Hope though.

Charley Aurora is really cute as well, I love Charley for a girl!

Jodi Lauretta is my last favorite, I love the name Jodi.

Hope I helped! Love from Hope xxxx

Trying to write a book. Read my prolouge?
It’s the first draft so I’m not done with it yet. Also, grammar is bad. Here goes-

The accident was 3 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. The memory haunts me and I’m sure it will haunt me forever more. No matter what I do, I just can’t get that day out of my head.
I was 14. School was stressful as usual. I always had trouble with school, but today was oe of those unbarable days.
I needed fresh air. I needed to get away from it all, my unloving family, my lack of friends.
I dropped my backpack off on the porch of my house, trying my hardest to leave unnoticed.
I started off towards the park, making probably the worst desicion of my life.
Walking down the deserted streets of mainstreet Merchantville, New Jersey, my flip-flops noised a happy tune that in no way reflected my mood. I turned the final corner towards the park.
The sky was light gray and I felt the faint drizzle of raindrops surround me. The soothing sound of it on the sidewalk calmed me and I let the drops soak my clothes and patter against my skin.
The park was empty, partially because it was raining partially because no one ever came to this park. Which is the reason I loved it so much, it was just about the only place I could be alone and think. It was old and most every surface was covered with griffitti.
I took my spot on the swing and began to sway back and forth.I thought over the day that seemed so uneventful to me but so tragic to my parents. A "C" on a test, deportment fo not paying attention in class. It was all so usual it just didn’t seem to matter anymore.
Then I got that feeling. The horrible, itching feeling that I was being watched. I was instantly pulled out of my own thoughts and thrown into the real world. I looked aroung. Nothing was out of the ordinary. Everything was just as it was when I got here.
"Your kidding yourself," I thought, "nothing is wrong. Your just stressed. Calm down."
I relaxed back on the swing. Taking deep breaths to wash away the feeling, but it wouldn’t go away.
The feeling was still there, stronger than before, now.
Next came the growl.
A low rumbling from deep in the bottom of an animal throat. The kind of growl that rattled your bones and sent a shiver down your spine.
The hair on the back of my neck rose and I sprung from the swing, sending it flying back and forth in my wake.
I couldn’t be imagining. The growl was so real it was almost tangible. My heart was pounding in my chest, the noise echoing in my ears.
I spun around, having already survayed the area in front of me and finding nothing. But behind me was no different.
Not yet convinced I narrowed my eyes straining to see the into the dark of the forest peaking out from behind the line of trees.
I jumped back in utter surpise and shock. My breathing picked up and I started to hyperventilate.
There, just 50 feet away, was a wolf. In Merchantville? It was huge, half hiden behind the trees. Long, yellow tinged teeth bared. It stepped slowly, menacingly, into the clearing, closer and closer to me.
Following behind it were two more wolves. Which stepped out in to the clearing just to be followed by two more.
But they weren’t normal wolves, to make matters worse. Even I, a normal, failing, 8th grader could tell that they were different. I noticed a faint blue glow radiating from the massive animal.
Screaming wouldnt help, it would just amke things charge. I couldn’t scream even if I tryed.
I took a step back. That was all I could do though. I was to frightened to run, frozen with fear. But would that make them charge, too? I was clueless. I had no experiance with wild animals of any kind, and with every second the wolves were getting closer and closer.
I was holding my breath now. They were so close, 15 feet away.
I tryed to take a step back but the wolves had had enough. The head wolf attacked. It jumped on me knocking me to the ground.
I couldn’t stiffle the scream that exploded out of my throat and ripped through the moist air.
The park ws filled with wild snarls and the sound of ripping clothes. I struggled and fought until I was so tired I wished I could give up. But I would not give in.
I felt the wolves sharp teeth pierce my skin and the cool dribble of blood ozzing frm the punctured wound.
I thrashed back and forth but all I could see was the fierce silloutte of the wolves muzzles and paws as they ripped and tore.
Pain coarsed through every inch of my aching, tired body, as I fought for my life. Until finally I felt darkness take over.
"I lost," I thought, "It’s over, I give up." and I let myself fade as my body slowly stopped struggling, so reluctantly.
I slackened and the wolves continued. Tearing at my clothes and ripping through my seemingly fragile skin.
The I could see nothing. Nothing but black…dark.
***
Voices. The faint clamor of panic stricken voices. Like buzzing in my ears.
I am being lifted. Raised up. But why do I still feel like I’m on the ground. I’m dead…I hav

Don’t do this as a flashback. Start with ACTION! You need to grab the reader or editor from sentence one. You do this with the active voice and action and conflict.

You also might want to seriously consider whether you want to do this in first person style. With a novel it really restricts you.

When building skyscrapers, do people skip the number 13?
My best friend said that everyone was afraid of skyscrapers, so they build them and where the thirteenth floor is supposed to be, they say it is the fourteenth. Is this true?

I have actually been in ones that either do or don’t have a 13th floor. It mainly I believe depends on the architect that is doing the project. The theory does come from the old superstition that 13 is an unlucky number.

| Oct 31, 2009

Yes, it is true.
wildbill05733 | Oct 31, 2009

Some buildings do, some do not.
There is a 13th floor, it’s just called 14. If 13 was left out, the building would fall, lol.

So, whatever number, the 13th floor is still there, just not named.
Most elevators I’ve been in DO have a floor 13, marked.

13 can be lucky too. We had 13 original states in USA, and our flag today still have 13 stripes, 7 red, 6 white.
No problem with 13 in my mind..

Ravenous (1999)

IMDB rating: 6.80

Plot: Captain John Boyd receives a promotion after defeating the enemy command in a battle of the Mexican-American War, but because the general realizes it was an act of cowardice that got him there, he is given a backhanded promotion to Fort Spencer, where he is third in command. The others at the fort are two Indians, George and his sister, Martha, who came with the place, Chaplain Toffler, Reich, the soldier; Cleaves, a drugged-up cook; and Knox, who is frequently drunk. When a Scottish stranger named Colquhoun appears and recovers from frostbite almost instantly after being bathed, he tells a story about his party leader, Ives, eating members of the party to survive. As part of their duty, they must go up to the cave where this occurred to see if any have survived. Only Martha, Knox, and Cleaves stay behind. George warns that since Colquhoun admits to eating human flesh, he must be a Windigo, a ravenous cannibalistic creature.

RESCUES: Are there any others who are dealing with the "dog mystery bug?"?
First: Please excuse my scattered brain. It has been a very long two weeks, going on the third now.
I am just putting some feelers out to see if I can try and understand a bug that we are dealing with in the local rescues. My Senior Schnauzer also has it so this is not a puppy ailment like I originally thought. The vet told me he has seen a lot of this in recent weeks and we are fighting but I wanted to see if anyone may have a clue as to what this is or if anyone has met with any better success at treating it.
It begins with very Parvo-like symptoms. We isolate and begin the treatment for Parvo. Now, here my Senior had the Parvo-like symptoms and that sort of floored me since my dogs are all current on vaccines. But, with little else to go on, I began treating him as I do the pups. Of course we also use the vet so this is not one of those people who like to look for a diagnosis and treatment online. This just seems to be a very crazy bug and the vet is treating symptoms as they come. Seems that is all we can do with this one.
Once the parvo-symptoms are gone, and have run a typical four day course, it looks as if things are returning to normal, but the pup still will not eat. Most of the parvo survivors I have dealt with are ravenous by the time the virus is up, so there is the first deviation. Some will begin to show signs of distemper next, and we have had some fall to this stage.(This is happening with dogs of all ages, vaccinated or not). But there are others who will dissipate into a bacterial infection. The darn thing does not seem to have an end. Those who recover tend to do well after, but getting to the recovery is a very long trip.
Has anyone else been seeing any signs of this, or does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on here?
The resilient strain of Parvo is what we thought it was in the beginning. Bit it has metamorphed into the respiratory symptoms and bacterial infections that "Dances" mentioned. I pray the two week mark will do it, and for the sake of the puppy rescue about five miles from me, I am really hoping this crap is not airborne. She lost two today and I think she has lost a total of seven. I lost four pups and thought I had it licked, but I do not deal a lot with pups. The four pups I have are healthy. Three Pits were badly abused, but not sick, and the fourth is a "parvo litter survivor." Although the parvo hit quicker and went through the pups faster than any I have ever seen. The first pup was dead with 8 hours from onset of symptoms.
My senior dog is sick and that is a "treat the symptoms" situation right now, but we are well into the sixth day on it. Please wish me well with that one.
Anyone who wants to cross post may do so. I am thoroughly convinced my senior survived the Parvo phase and have no doubt that is what it was. I know the four pups that began this all died from Parvo. And they were healthy one day, and dead the next, literally. Ironically, they died in the order they had received their vaccines. The litter was four males and one female. The female survived. This does mutate into somethign else though and all of these responses tell me that it is not isolated to here. The symptoms seems as varied as the dogs themselves. And it goes from one problem to the next. My Duffie seems to be doing a little better today but I am frightened almost to say it.
Chi Girl: If you hear anything else from Illinois, please let me know. And you are doing the right thing to keep your dogs inside. it is very hurtful to know you ahve done everything in your power to keep your dogs healthy and then watch this darn bug hit and wreak havoc.
I have extended the expiration on this, hoping I can report good news after we see the vet again. But, guys, the CDC and the vets have not been able to tell me a lot here. Treat the symptoms. Those of you with dogs, and that deal with sick animals, get your IV fluids stocked up and get prepared for the long haul if one gets sick. By the way, the bolus of fluid under the skin has seemed to work better than an IV as the dogs do tend to go from dehydration to an almost fluid overload state with the wet respirations. Lasix helps. It is strange to give a dog an IV and Lasix at the same time, but whatever works!!! Also, the person who wrote about Flagyl (metronidazole), YES…that is the only thing that has had any effect at all on this.
I am almost afraid to post that Duffie is doing better tonight.
But you guys, please, as Chigirl said, this is something to be feared as a lot of dogs are not recovering. And it is not just the shelter dogs and those that have not been vaccinated. This is well cared for dogs with nothing wrong until this bug hits and then situations go from bad to worse. The reason I said I am afraid to say he is doing better, int he past, every time he would get betterm, within a few hours, another symptom would hit with a fury. I am holding my breath and cautiously relieved.
I wish I could put my finger on something like the dog flu or parvo and say, that is it, but it is not. If we could name it, we could eventually do better than treating the symptoms as they arise. It begins as a viral infection and ends with a bacteral one with other symptoms and problems in between. When my vet does not have the answer, I know it is bad.
Duffie has recovered. He is weak and apparently oine of the few of the seniors to survive this. I will not say it was easy, but the key is extremely aggressive treatment from the start and no cutting back until they begin to eat.
Thanks all of you. It is a bacterial infection and it leaves the dog very weak for a while after recovery. so be prepared for the long haul if your dog gets sick. It is also highly contagious so keep the dog in isolation. But we have proven it can be beaten.
Thanks guys and best of luck.

I haven’t heard of this but I am starring it so others will see and maybe be able to offer some help
Adopt a rescue and save a life | Jan 31, 2010

It doesn’t sound like H3N8 dog flu or H1N1, but it might be a good idea to test for it anyway.

Have you contacted CDC? They may have heard of other cases and might be able to point you in the right direction.

As far as eating goes, give the dogs vitamin B and offer really stinky foods. Canned cat food works well.

I would be very interested in anything you find out about this.

For those curious about H3N8 dog flu here is the CDC fact sheet, symptoms included http://www.cdc.gov/flu/canine/

I couldn’t come up with a good list of H1N1 symptoms in dogs, but then there has only been one confirmed case of H1N1 in canines so far.Chances are the symptoms of H1N1 would be simliar to H3N8 dog flu.

Please contact CDC to let them know what you’re experiencieng so they can send workers out or advise you on what to do.

What does this dream mean?
alright so i was dreaming last night and this is what happened.

I was in a room with "cosmic bowl" lighting and music blasting. It was like a party.

For some reason, I felt something in my pocket….. It was a remote with one black button. I was confused and didn’t know what to do. Then someone took the remote from me. I asked "what am i going to get in return". She said "nothing". Then she started to make out with me. Then she gave the remote back to me, and ran off. I chased her into a bathroom where i saw my shoes in a stall and she ran past me again into a car. My dad was driving the car and asked me to retrieve my shoes. I went to the bathroom and put my shoes on. I found the remote in the toilet. I picked it up and pressed the giant black button. Nothing happened. then i woke up….it was weird.

lol.. i think you would get something unexpected and fun, enjoy :)
