Great Wedding Planning Tips

Bridesmaids in brown, cupcakes instead of cake, vegetables as table decor, reception guests donning fake mustaches for goofy poses in photo booths.

This is not your mother’s wedding.

“Now, it’s really about who you are,” says Jill Childs, owner of Events by I. Candy, who rents some of the trendiest decor around for area weddings. She’s working with one couple who chose a movie theme for the wedding. On tap: a popcorn buffet.

Childs’ showroom near U.S. 131 and 54th Street SW is stocked with big apothecary jars, glossy white candelabras dripping with crystals, oversized glass and chrome drink dispensers with little spigots, huge decorative bird cages and an array of accessories — from chair covers to chargers to table linens to lamp shades — all printed to match.

Childs, an art school graduate who also owns a graphic design and print shop, Printech, sees couples bringing their personal styles to their weddings more than ever before. Other wedding planners agree: creativity rules.

A look at what creative couples are doing:

Cupcakes are big. Well, actually, they’re small, which is part of the appeal. “Guests can just grab ’em,” Grand Rapids wedding planner Aletha VanderMaas of Pearls Events says. They save money, too, she notes. Get a tower of them, instead of a cake.

Photo booths have been popular for the past few years and still are going strong. Set up at the reception, it offers guests a chance to ham it up then print out a strip of pics — one to keep and one to go to the bride and groom. The bride and groom get an album at the end filled with the strips. Used as a guest book, guests can write in their messages.

Colorful, casual invitations. Used to be, you could choose from ivory or white and matched with perfect, creative and unique envelopes such as poly envelopes. Now, color rules, says Joy’l Ver Heul of Paper Nest Designs, which makes custom invitations — no two designs the same.

Grand Rapids bride Elizabeth Tejchma, who married Donald Pasco in October, wore a teal bolero jacket atop her white gown with matching teal shoes.

Which color? Tip: The color experts at Pantone, which follows color trends in fashion and movies, announced that 2010’s Color of the Year is turquoise.

Bling. “Detail, detail, detail,” Walker florist Shelly Johnson said at her booth at last month’s West Michigan Wedding Association Bridal Show. Her flowers all had extra sparkle — gemstones glued in flower centers, dotted at petal’s edge or strewn on thread throughout the bouquet.

Another modern touch, Johnson says — small mementos tucked in the bridal bouquet or attached with ribbons. A photo of a loved one, maybe, or jewelry that has meaning.

Involving the guests. Ver Heul attended a recent wedding at which each guest was given a flower as they entered the church. After the minister explained how the flowers were symbols of love for the bride and groom, guests were invited to the altar to add their varied blooms to large glass vases, taking part in the arrangements that decorated the church, then the reception.

Out with the old. “Couples are moving away from things like the garter toss,” VanderMaas says. At her wedding three years ago, instead of tossing her bouquet to a crowd of single women, she graciously presented it to the woman at her wedding who had been married the longest. “She was so thrilled,” she recalls.

Think outside the vase. Table centerpieces don’t have to be flowers. “One couple who met at the library used piles of cool old books and mingled in candles,” VanderMaas says. “I’ve seen birdcages. And lots of fruit. Fruit is big. Not all 20 tables have to have the same centerpiece.”

Make it personal. More than ever, couples are incorporating their own stories into their wedding, planners say.

VanderMaas tells of one wedding at which the bride and groom were seasoned travelers. Each table at the reception was named for a place they had visited, with a card telling a story of their visit there. “Everyone loved walking around reading all the stories,” she says.

Ver Heul knows a couple who collected antique bingo cards. They used them as the background for their wedding invitation.

Do good. Some couples turn their wedding into a charity fundraiser, asking guests to donate to good causes in lieu of gifts.

Help save the lives of your babies by preventing these risks

Sleeping babies by fireman_alfred

Practicing proper sleep positions can help save the lives of infants.

Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center’s childbirth professionals express this during their pre-and post-natal classes.

In a Robert Wood Johnson Medical School study, researchers identified that despite a decrease in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) directly related to incorporating safe-sleep practices, more than 96 percent of infants who died of SIDS were exposed to known risk factors.

Those risk factors include sleeping on side or stomach, exposure to tobacco smoke, or use of pillows, quilts and soft or loose bedding. The study authors noted that 78 percent of SIDS deaths were caused by exposure to multiple risk factors.

According to Janet Peirce-Hollett, a childbirth educator at the nonprofit hospital located at 14502 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West, SIDS is devastating for a parent to go through, which is why we stress the importance of ‘Back to Sleep’ in our Labor and Birth.

“What this means is simply this: put baby on her back to sleep,” explained Catherine Walden, another childbirth educator at Banner Del E. Webb. Everyone loves to decorate baby’s crib with the perfect crib bedding, but in reality it’s just not safe.”

Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center offers childbirth classes on a regular basis. The Labor and Birth Classes are  each week, from 6 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday; and 9 a.m - 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

For a complete listing of classes visit www.bannerhealth.com/WebbClasses or call 602-230-CARE (2273) for information.

SIDS is the third leading cause death in infants between 2 and 4 months old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study, “Concurrent Risks in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome” stresses the importance of educating parents and other caregivers about all identified risk factors for SIDS.

Effective Way to Promote Proper and Better Sleep for Your Children

For many children, wearing snuggly pajamas and soft slippers does not mean they are ready to crawl into a soft cozy bed. Unfortunately for some parents, night time can be the most dreaded time of the day. Dreaded because there are some children who just don't want to go to sleep for various reasons.

There are plenty of reasons why children don't want to hit the sack. Some pre-school aged children feel that they will miss out on something fun and exciting. For other children in elementary school, anxiety about taking a test the next day at school may be keeping them awake.

I obviously knew nothing about children. When my older twins were three years old and my younger twins were two years old, I went through a very challenging time trying to get everyone to fall asleep. It became a vicious cycle because the less sleep they got, the crankier they seemed to be.

I tried lavender baths right before bed, I tried earlier dinners, I tried Sesame Street Bedtime Stories DVD's and the list goes on and on. It's exhausting enough trying to get one overtired child to bed. Four overtired children who couldn't fall asleep was way too many for one household.

As a lifestyle reporter with years of interviewing medical experts, I clearly knew that not getting enough sleep weakens your immune system. According to Dr. Sears, world renowned pediatrician, children aged two to five years old need ten to twelve hours of sleep per day. I can only imagine what Dr. Sears would have said about six to seven hours of sleep a night.

I knew that I had to think outside of the box for a sleep remedy that would work for young children. So as a stressed out adult, I looked back at some of the most relaxing moments of my years before children and they always involved the spa. So I decided to recreate a spa night at home that was child friendly and see if it put everyone into a more relaxed zone.

What many parents seem to forget is that young children do suffer from stress and anxiety. Of course it is not the same level of stress we suffer from with our jobs, our finances and endless list of responsibilities. In your toddler's mind however, the stress can be overwhelming enough to affect their daily behavior. Some children become overstimulated from new pre-school classes they are taking or frustrated from trying to learn a new skill.

So I created a spa environment for them that included aromatherapy, soaking the feet, a light foot massage and nature soundtrack of ocean waves. The first night I experimented with this, I could just see the nervous energy melting away.

That night my children went to sleep without a struggle and fell asleep faster. I did not have to deal with the mutliple excuses of why they just HAD to get out of bed.

Tips on saving money for nursery expenses

Expecting a baby? You can also expect some major home-decorating costs. Estimates are that outfitting a nursery costs anywhere from 2,000 USD and 6,000 USD, and that's just the start.

Call it “ringing” up baby.

Based on an industry statistics, Americans spend about 27 billion USD yearly on products for newborn to preschool-aged tots and canada with  about 10 per cent of the U.S. population, can be estimated to spend about 2.7 billion USD.

“Babies are big business,” says Alan Fields, co-author of Baby Bargains.

Like imported Italian cribs. Memory foam mattresses. Cherry wood changing tables. Video monitors. Trendy bedding ensembles. Stylish crib mobiles. Designer area rugs. 1,000 USD strollers.

Lynne Tapper, professional organizer and co-author of Baby Daze: The Ultimate Baby Organizer, says trips to baby boutiques can make your heart soar but your wallet cringe.

“Everything is so cute. It's hard to resist. We learned with our first baby that you don't have to buy everything,” says Brandt, a West Hartford, Conn., resident. “As soon as the baby comes home from the hospital, you'll need diapers, clothes and someplace safe for the baby to sleep. The rest of it is optional.”

If you're designing a nursery on a budget, you've got plenty of low-cost choices, according to Fields.

“Babies don't care if they're sleeping on designer sheets, and they don't care if their clothes are in a laundry basket or a designer dresser,” says Fields. “As long as you've chosen products that don't compromise your baby's safety, the price doesn't matter.”

Fields warns against second-hand cribs. Older models may not meet current safety standards, can be missing hardware and can have lead-paint finishes.

You can find deals on dressers, gliders, changing tables and rockers, along with lamps, rugs, mobiles and bedding sets.

Thrifty moms and dads have discovered the world of baby consignment shopping. Some second-hand stores specialize in used infant and children's clothing, furniture, toys and equipment.

“Baby things really don't get much wear and tear. In some cases, things have been received as gifts and haven't been used at all,” says Midge Becker, owner of Best Dressed Kids in Bloomfield, Conn.

The recent economic downturn has encouraged more people to sell baby gear once it's no longer in use, so there are more bargains than ever before for new parents.

Websites offer nursery item deals as well. At Craigslist.org, visitors click on the “Baby and Kid Stuff” link to browse a changing mix of new and used Juicy Couture diaper bags, Dutailier gliders and Ethan Allen dressers. Ebay features new and used infant furnishings and decor.

Just as in grown-up spaces, no nursery decor project gives you more effect for your money than painting. Baby room colour palettes have evolved from pale pinks, blues or yellows to such options as bright citrus shades of lime, tangerine and lemon, sophisticated neutrals and even black and white with pops of red. (Consumer Reports recommends using a low- or zero-VOC paint and painting the nursery at least two months before your baby arrives to allow fumes to subside.)

Here are a few more tips for saving money on nursery expenses:

- Don't buy everything at once. Your baby will need a crib or bassinet right away. A high chair, on the other hand, won't get used for six months or more.

- Avoid buying cute accessories and toys. New babies mean gifts, so leave a lot of shopping to later.

Reason Why LSU Is The Only College Team That Is Free To Wear White Jerseys At Home

LSU tigers has worn white jerseys for seven bowl games, including three Sugar Bowl games for this decade. It has always been the tradition that any home team can wear any color they preferred and probably LSU tigers has chosen white due to heat.

The successful business of the ultra-luxury cruise sector

The current market condition defines luxury as an individual choice.

The differing consumer preference has influenced the diverse range of cruise ships which are being introduced over the last few years.

Other people will think that a luxury experience by jaw dropping dazzling interiors, show stopping entertainment and a wide choice of extraordinary activities which are not traditionally associated with cruising, for some, big is best, and others prefer the old school style of cruising with formal evenings and deck quoits.

Still, the ultra-luxury sector is defined by small and intimate experiences that are personal and understated. These new breed of cruisers have either ‘climbed the cruise ladder’ or have never before dipped their toe into the cruising ocean.

Land Lubbers are finding that they can get exceptional value for money onboard an all inclusive cruise; see the world without ever have to unpack. The understated informal atmosphere suits those who wish to please themselves and have the flexibility and control over their experience – not restricted to regimental schedules or formal dining arrangements.

Despite the economic situation, bookings for ultra-luxury cruises are up which is a major achievement given a dramatic increase in capacity at such an uncertain time.

When it comes to dress code, we have found that our guests are making a move away from formal evening attire, preferring to adopt a more casual dress code, we call them the ‘millionaires in trainers’ – but again, this comes down to personal choice, people don’t wish to be dictated to – if you can afford to choose to cruise at the very top end of the market, you don’t want to be told what to wear.

We now only have one formal night on most 7 night cruises and have an ‘elegantly casual’ dress code onboard.

We introduced Seabourn Odyssey in June 2009, although three times the size of her smaller sisters, she only carries twice as many guests. The benefits being more personal space and more choice onboard – including five restaurants, a two deck spa, 90% of suites have balconies and there is more open deck space.

We were extremely nervous about how our loyal guests would react to our newest member of the fleet but she has been welcomed with open arms by guests both old and new.

We can’t wait to introduce her sister, Seabourn Sojourn at Greenwich in June this year and not forgetting the smaller sisters which are all benefiting from multi-million pound refurbishments this year.

Looking for quality and affordable wines? Try wines from Argentina and Chile

Wine Rack by kellyburnham

wooden wine racks

The Chilean wine industry has been rather stagnant for most of the history of the industry in the country. Today, there are almost 100 wineries in Chile, but as recently as 1995, there were only a dozen.

The Aresti Estate Selection Carmenere (USD10) is a nice example of an offering using the great grape of the country. The carmenere is a varietal that was permitted in the Bordeaux region of France. The vines were wiped out by a phyloxera epidemic there, and the only remaining vines were in Chile where they were commonly thought to be merlot.

The wine country of Argentina got off to a bad start when the first vines that were planted all died. With a decade and much patience, the fields of Argentina finally produced grapes capable of creating wine. The wine industry grew fast and expanded to be the leading wine-making country outside of Europe.

The influence of Italian wine makers is evidenced by the presence of sangiovese, barbera, nebbiolo and other Italian grape vineyards. However the great grape of the country is the malbec.

The malbec is used to produce varietal offerings in the Cahors appellation in France, but the most common use for this grape is as a blending wine. Argentina has the right conditions to produce some very fine malbec offerings.

Strengthen your golf performance with these methods

Finally we have had some decent weather this past week! I can’t seem to remember a December where there have been so few golf days.

As winter season begins, the most significant thing I like to recommend is to do some simple golf swing techniques in front of a mirror. Make your golf swing in a little bit better shape when the weather is fair and you get a chance to practice.

Here is one of my favorite indoor practices that I usually do when the weather is not good.

The first thing you need to do is to look for a place where you can perform your golf swing without anything else getting in your way. This place should also have a mirror or reflective surface where you can see a fairly good reflection of yourself. Remember, you have to check above your head, too.

Kim Cifuentes Golf Swing by ocazus

learn golf

The next you need to do is to try to make as big a turn as possible, trying to keep the shaft of the club as level to the ground as you can.

Once you have made as big a turn as you can, hold this position for a count of two to five seconds, or whatever amount of time you feel is most comfortable for you. Doing this maneuver for eight to 10 repetitions will help create a better turn and improve your flexibility.

Remember, try to keep the shaft of the club level to the ground while you are making your turn. If you notice the shaft pointing at the ground while you are doing this drill, the maneuver is being done incorrectly.

Doing this drill for five to 10 minutes a day will help you during these cold periods when practicing outside is not an option.

As always, I hope this quick tip will help you with your golf game. Remember, if you are having trouble with your game, contact your PGA golf professional for some help or advice.

Cleaning Your CDs

Grease particles and fingerprints eat into CDs. So be particularly careful when handling them. Hold them carefully by pinching pointing finger and thumb through the hole of the CD or your longest fingers at the rim of the CD. Never leave them lying about without being replaced into their CD sleeves. As soon as you have completed a task with your CD, replace it carefully in its container, whatever type it may be. The first line of defense is always to prevent scratches and marks by taking good care of your CD's.

At sometime your CD is going to need a clean — usually when it skips or will not load. A good wipe with an anti-static cloth should do the trick, but at times that is not enough, especially if something has been spilled on the CD or it has been manhandled.

I have researched a number of ways of cleaning CD's and it seems that each and every person has their own special way of taking care of their CD cleaning.

What shocked me most was seeing a video on YouTube of someone cleaning their shiny CD with something as abrasive as toothpaste! I cannot recommend it, but if you are prepared to give it a try, I suggest you do some careful research first.

Personally, I would stay away from anything abrasive for cleaning my CD's and I would be wary of cleaning them with anything oily, greasy or creamy either.

Here are a few tips to help you get those CD's clean:

Cloth

1. Use a wiping cloth that is anti-static (you can purchase them cheaply in the supermarket).
2. Don't use any cloths that are abrasive or fluffy. You want them to pick up lint and not deposit lint.
3. There is a fabulous cloth on the product market for cleaning CD's. It's said to work like magic and there is no need to use any cleaners with it. It may be well-worth looking into.

Home based or readily-available products

1. Using an anti-static wiping cloth, wipe your CD carefully. That in itself may be enough to clean it.
2. Use no harsh cleansing products.
3. If there are grease or spill marks on your CD, gently wipe with anti-static cloth and one drop of liquid dishwasher mixed into some warm water. The way you wipe is important and I will discuss it later.
4. Don't be tempted to use only plain tap water - mineral water is better.

How to wipe

You will be surprised that the way to use your wiping cloth is not by following the circular rings from inner to outer, as I would have imagined - but rather to use straight wiping movements with your anti-static cloth back and forth from the CD hole to the outer edge and back.

Re-storing

It is important to replace your CD's back in their sleeves or containers only when totally dry. This is why an alcohol-based product primarily for this job is the best cleaning fluid. Keep your CD's clean and save yourself a lot of aggro and wasted money.

Tips For Keeping Your City Carpets Clean

If you live in a big city like New York, Chicago, or Washington D.C, you know that the weather can really wreak havoc on your carpets. People who live in America's biggest cities are usually walking or mass-transit fans, especially on the east coast. Tracking through a city in rainy and snowy conditions will inevitably lead to tracking everything you collect on the bottom of your shoes through the house and across your carpets! Here are some tips for keeping your city carpets clean and lasting longer.

– Adopt a “no shoes” policy

Yes, it takes a lot of discipline on the part of both you as well as your children to remember to take your shoes off before entering the house or apartment. But once you get into the habit, shoe removal will become as natural and automatic as breathing. If you'd like, you may ask your guests to remove their shoes as well.

– Vacuum: a lot!

It doesn't take long at all for dirt to makes it way down through the fibers of your beautiful carpet and become ground in, doing lots of damage to the integrity of your flooring in the process. Many city dwellers vacuum high- traffic areas on a daily basis as part of their regular chores. Lower-traffic areas can get by with a weekly going-over.

– Eating-only areas

Spilled foods and drinks are the main causes of stains and spots; so designate certain areas of your house for eating and do not permit food anywhere else. If spots do get on your carpets, blot them up immediately before they have a chance to set.

– Clean 'em twice a year

Have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year, preferably twice. No matter how well you take care of your flooring, you will never be able to keep them absolutely pristine. Regular cleanings will protect your investment longer and will keep your floors looking stunning.
