Legion… They are kind of like zombies but really more "possessed" people.

It’s going to be tough for you to find one with "smart" survivors because much of a zombie movie is built around people learning to survive rather than already knowing how. That said, there are only a few that I can think of off the top of my head…
1.) Cemetery Man (1994): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/
The main character seems to have a pretty good handle on dealing with the dead, although the rest of the town is oblivious to his efforts.
2.) Night of the Living Dead (1968): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/
While I wanted to b*tch slap the majority of the characters, I always thought the main guy got his wits about him pretty quickly and did everything in his power to protect the bumbling idiots he was surrounded by.
3.) Dead Alive (1991): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/
Peter Jackson’s contribution to the zombie genre… and not a bad one as I see it. While it’s very hokey in some (or most) parts, again the main character seems to come to grips in the nick of time and, although he can’t save the town from the zombies, he does save himself and the girl he loves… which is more than can be said for most of protagonists in zombie movies.
That’s all I have for now. If I think of more, I’ll edit this answer. I know what it’s like to yearn for a satisfying plot and protagonist in zombie films.

ha ha ha, i know what you mean. i think these have the smart ones in them - dawn of the dead (the original and the remake) - day of the dead( the 2006 one) - night of the living dead (the 2nd one) that lady and the black guy were the smartest ones in it. most of them do have stupid survivors, where they make a tragic mistake to get themselfs killed anyway. night of the living dead, where that guy shoots the lock off the gas pump, and the truck explodes, that was dumb.
