Meet the Robinsons
Meet the Robinsons (2007)

IMDB rating: 6.80

Plot: Meet the Robinsons is filled with extraordinarily inappropriate and insensitive messages about adoption that will be disturbing to many children. The basic story is about an adorable baby whose birthmother leaves him on the doorstep of an orphanage. Portrayed as loving, sweet, extremely smart and overly appealing, he spends the next 12 years of his life wanting a family and being turned down by one family after another - in all, 114 couples refuse to adopt him. One disturbing scene shows a prospective dad losing interest in adopting the child because the youngster is more interested in science than sports. When he accidentally splatters them with food from his science project, both prospective parents walk out in a huff , leaving one very sad and disappointed little boy. Since no one else wants him, the child invents a time machine that will take him back in time to find his birth mother. The “bad guy” in his time travel journey turns out to be his best childhood buddy who was once his orphanage roommate. Now an emotional wreck resulting from being left behind when the orphanage was closed and shut down, the once-cute orphan is now mean and devious. The story continues with numerous monsters attacking the child as he continues to search for his birth mother.

Why do people say Disney's animated movies lack diversity?
If you look at where the movies are set you notice something else. They are set in:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs = Germany
Pinocchio = Italy
Fantasia = Ambiguous
The "packaged" movies = Latin America
Dumbo = USA
Bambi = Austria
Cinderella = France
Alice in Wonderland = rural England
Peter Pan = London, England
Lady and the Tramp = USA
Sleeping Beauty = France
One Hundred and One Dalmatians = London, England
The Sword in the Stone = medieval England
The Jungle Book = India
The Aristocats = Paris, France (1910)
Robin Hood = Nottingham, England (~1100)
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh = England
The Rescuers = New York, USA (one of the characters is Hungarian)
The Fox and the Hound = Ambiguous
The Black Cauldron = Wales
The Great Mouse Detective = Victorian London (one of the characters is Scottish)
Oliver & Company = New York City, USA
The Little Mermaid = Denmark
The Rescuers Down Under = Australian outback
Beauty and the Beast = rural France
Aladdin = Arabia
The Lion King = southern Africa
Pocahontas = United Kingdom/Native American land
The Hunchback of Notre Dame = Paris, France (several of the characters are Romani (gypsies))
Hercules = Ancient Greece
Mulan = China
Tarzan = West Africa
Dinosaur = pre-historic setting of what is now Venezuela
The Emperor’s New Groove = Inca empire (now modern day Peru)
Atlantis: The Lost Empire = Island of Atlantis (characters who are Atlantean/American/French/Italian)
Lilo & Stitch = Hawaii
Treasure Planet = South-west England mid 18th century/Caribbean
Brother Bear = post Ice Age North America (some characters are Native Americans)
Home on the Range = American West
Chicken Little = Small-town America
Meet the Robinsons = America in the future
Bolt = Hollywood/New York City/Las Vegas

And the next one out is the Princess and the Frog which is set in New Orleans with African-American characters. But why are some people seriously saying Disney lacked diversity before this? Do they seriously believe that all whites are the same? Are they choosing to ignore other Disney movies with non-white characters?
@David: 0.0 I guess you’ve missed the storm that has come since the announcement of TPATF. ;D

Regarding ethnicity, I have no problems with Disney, but I have to admit that I’m not keen on the way they alter and change the original fairy tales and stories. I grew up with H.C. Andersen’s "The Little Mermaid" and the Disney version just feels wrong and in my opinion misrepresents the original fairy tale. Why even base the movie on the original story? Why not just write a new mermaid story with a happy end?

Who said they aren’t diverse?
David | Dec 11, 2009

Alice in Wonderland does not take place in England. It takes place in Wonderland. Peter Pan takes place in Neverland. Just sayin’.

What they mean is that all Disney movies use the same cliches and plot devices. They aren’t racially in- diverse, they’re cinematographically in- diverse.
Rob | Dec 11, 2009

Nobody said it wasn’t diverse. It’s just that they didn’t use a black person, and black people are a significant part of American History, yet we never used a black person.

Why do women approach men, act interested, then act surprised when we ask for their number?
I’m a handsome, in shape and fit guy but lately this has happened to me a lot. Women will come up to me, start asking questions, making small talk etc. but when I ask for their number, they all of a sudden get "uncomfortable". As if I was the one who came up to them and somehow "annoyed" them or something.

The woman comes up TO ME, makes small talk, asks personal questions and then wonders why I’m asking for her number at the end? I am curious and mabye some women out there can help me out with this. If you’re not interested in the guy, why do you approach them to begin with and start making small talk?

It is very, VERY annoying.

women are wierd and complicated…..dont even try to understand what they want
FeEl GoOd | Feb 04, 2010

maybe because those girls are surprised that you think they are attractive too, and want their number.
FIERCE. | Feb 04, 2010

the probably want attention, but guys dont give them the attention that they want (or they are attention whores and always need attention). They want to be one of those girls who actually have to turn guys down because THEY get approached, but something about them turns guys off from wanting to date them…so they approach you and probably lie about a ton of stuff and act like either airheads or "sexy, intelligent women" to try and tempt you. Then when you ask for their number, they get the satisfaction of turning a guy down. It is probably even MORE satisfying to turn down a good, intelligent man (you sound intelligent), because it is like, "Hah! I’m still better than you."
Don’t let them get to you. Maybe try blowing these girls off and ask out a girl YOU are interested in from the get-go.

Good luck!!!
Sandy | Feb 04, 2010

It’s not that the women aren’t interested, it’s that asking for their number is the wrong thing to do. Most women don’t give out their number to near-strangers for safety reasons. Why not offer them your number instead?

last minute outfit ideas?
ok so this week’s spirit week and tomorrow’s super hero day. i had a big plan where i would wear a cape and a mask and bright tights with shorts over them. unfortunately, we didnt have time to go to the store so i couldnt get a good fabric to make a cape out of. the one i attempted ( a purple sheer) looks extremely crappy.
so i thought well no cape but what about a mask? well i wear glasses, i thought i could wear it under or over the glasses but both look extremely stupid. i don’t have contacts and im blind without my glasses.
the tights and shorts? i don’t have tights and, other than gym shorts, no shorts.
i don’t have any superman shirts and my dad won’t let me write "supergirl" or anything on any of my shirts now.
UGHHHH there’s no way i can dress up for super hero day tomorrow :(
it’s already really late.
any really quick last minute ideas?
plz plz plz plz plz

Be rocker girl. Were a band tee, or just a black tee. Try neon colors. Tight skinny jeans, and sneakers. Put on cool make-up and make your hair REALLY messy. Paint your nails black or a VERY VERY bright/neon color. Were a choker and have the power to rock people until they become good. <3

Legion… They are kind of like zombies but really more "possessed" people.
AbRa~Ca~DaBra | Jan 26, 2010

It’s going to be tough for you to find one with "smart" survivors because much of a zombie movie is built around people learning to survive rather than already knowing how. That said, there are only a few that I can think of off the top of my head…

1.) Cemetery Man (1994): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/
The main character seems to have a pretty good handle on dealing with the dead, although the rest of the town is oblivious to his efforts.
2.) Night of the Living Dead (1968): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/
While I wanted to b*tch slap the majority of the characters, I always thought the main guy got his wits about him pretty quickly and did everything in his power to protect the bumbling idiots he was surrounded by.
3.) Dead Alive (1991): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/
Peter Jackson’s contribution to the zombie genre… and not a bad one as I see it. While it’s very hokey in some (or most) parts, again the main character seems to come to grips in the nick of time and, although he can’t save the town from the zombies, he does save himself and the girl he loves… which is more than can be said for most of protagonists in zombie movies.

That’s all I have for now. If I think of more, I’ll edit this answer. I know what it’s like to yearn for a satisfying plot and protagonist in zombie films.
Meaghan | Jan 26, 2010

ha ha ha, i know what you mean. i think these have the smart ones in them - dawn of the dead (the original and the remake) - day of the dead( the 2006 one) - night of the living dead (the 2nd one) that lady and the black guy were the smartest ones in it. most of them do have stupid survivors, where they make a tragic mistake to get themselfs killed anyway. night of the living dead, where that guy shoots the lock off the gas pump, and the truck explodes, that was dumb.

What do you think of my movie review?
It’s for Sherlock Holmes:

A new trend seems to have started in cinema designed to make the cinema goer revisit a movie release either by visiting the cinema again, in some kind of hope, or by waiting for the DVD to come out and hiring it, over an extra day + a fine, to finally get the whole movie ‘experience’.

The 2007 movie by Robert Rodriguez, Planet Terror, rushed the explaination part of the movie soo swifty that cinema visitors had no choice but to watch the film again (or not, depending on your feelings towards the cast)

If this is a successful format for yourself you can state your own delightful experience(s) at the end of this piece and although this movie audio art was perfected with Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Junior chatting over eachothers dialogue in the 1st Iron Man, in Sherlock Holmes it is taken to the point of upset.

The movie flows like a sleigh down a very snowy steep hill only to anoy (myself) with yet another Guy Richie bare knuckled boxing match (I was going to write homoerotic naked mud wrestling, and if it was Rose McGowan and Rachel McAdams getting to grips with eachother in the ring the DVD would be on order already!)

Hitting someone until they are not concious is not, in my view, a valid sport but this ‘getting down with the oiks’ movie stands only one twist away from being the dismal Minority Report, the fact that Laws understated Watson and Juniors Holmes suggest they should leave McGowan and McAdams to it emphasizes that the special effects and plot had better deliver, from what I could make out; I don’t know.

There are some spelling errors that affect the flow of the review, but if comes off as less a review and more as commentary (which is valid, but should be presented as such)

Night of the Comet
Night of the Comet (1984)

IMDB rating: 6.10

Plot: Two sisters, high school seniors in the early 1980s, awaken one morning to blood red skies and the realization that the human race has been wiped out. It becomes apparant that anyone who was not surrounded by steel when the Earth recently passed through the tail of Haley’s comet has been reduced to a pile of red ash (the trace elements of human chemical makeup.) They encounter a rebellious Native American man and take over the air waves at a local radio station in an attempt to get help. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of scientists who knew what the effects of the comet would be. They hid underground in a steel laboratory, but idiotically left the vents open. Now, as various survivors of the comet who were only partially surrounded by steel are decaying into flesh-hungry zombies, the scientists are attempting to come up with a vaccine made of the blood of people who were not infected by the comet. Thus the trio must fight their way past not only roving packs of the cannibalistic dead, but also outsmart a pack of scientists desperate not to become that way themselves.

I second "The Dark Crystal" and am quite surprised to hear that it is considered rubbish! It’s a classic as far as I’m concerned.

The Wicker Man (1974 version, not the crappy remake from last year). People either love or hate it.

Maybe i’m suffering from latent homosexuality as most of the crap films i love seem to star large scantily clad he-men!

Hercules (Lou Ferrigno) a masterclass in sh*tness.
Commando (Schwarzenegger) he eats green berets for breakfast!
Kickboxer (Van Damme) greatest p*ssed up dancing ever!
Rocky IV (Stallone) I still get shivers when Apollo hits the deck in slo-mo.
Missing in Action 2 (Chuck Norris) so much better than number 1.
Marked for Death (Steven Seagal) Bumba clot!
The Story of Ricky (Siu-Wong Fan) he strangles someone with their own intestines!

(also: I don’t think Lynch’s Eraserhead is considered to be a bad movie. Most film critics with any taste consider it a classic).
